A safe place for healing and respite- it’s not a big ask is it? And yet, there’s no place like it in our community, let alone a culturally safe residential service for Aboriginal women in the entire of New South Wales.

We want to be the ones to change that - but we can’t do it alone.

We need the help and support of the community to help us get there- we need you!

Our goal is to raise 500,000 AUD to start building a brand new residential space to support Aboriginal women and children who are in desperate need, right now.

Aunty Sandra’s Safe haven

We want to create a safe residential haven for Aboriginal women and children called Aunty Sandra’s safe haven.

Aunty Sandra is a proud Bundjalung woman who serves as a director on our Board. She’s worked tirelessly with Aboriginal women and their children for many years and she dreams of a place where in times of crisis these women can get away from difficult homes to a place of healing and respite.

Aunty Sandra’s Safe Haven will be a restorative place where women have time to reflect and start to rebuild their lives with the support of our amazing professional staff.

  • A culturally safe space for aboriginal women and children
  • A place for respite from the everyday struggles many of these women and their children face
  • Specialist support and advice to help women tackle their issues and re-build their confidence
  • The chance for a fresh start, armed with the skills to face the challenges of life

A great need

We know the need is great because we see it and hear it, day in and day out. Aboriginal women and their children suffer disproportionately from the negative effects of drug and alcohol misuse,

domestic violence and living in overcrowded accommodation. Together these have long-lasting and devastating consequences that repeat from generation to generation causing deeply embedded inequalities in society.

We recognise that there is a huge task to tackle the root of these issues, but we also want to be able to respond to the pressing need of families, right now. And that’s where Aunty Sandra’s safe haven will come in.

Why Nama?

We have one of the highest populations of Aboriginal people in Australia, so these issues are even more pronounced in our local community. Birth rates among Aboriginal women are more than double the mainstream population and with growing populations, come a growing number of issues.

We need land and buildings for a new residential centre, close enough to the cities to remain connected, but with the peace of a rural setting to allow our clients the time for some peaceful reflection. We have all of the tools to make Aunty Sandra’s Safe Haven a reality – the experience, the passion and the community connection. We just need to take the next step to raise the funds to get going and we want to do that as fast as possible.

Could you help us reach our target?

We’re looking for supporters who could help us to reach our initial target of A$500,000 to start making this dream a reality. Could you be one of them?

  • 50 AUD Each smaller donation helps us to lay the foundations of this essential service. 50 AUD is around a square metre of land, a small, but significant piece of bigger 5-acre site we’ll need
  • 1,000 AUD could buy us around a square metre of building
  • 10,000 AUD could pay for local council development application and certification costs.
